Last chance to share your views on Introductory Tenancies

Published: Wednesday 12 October 2022

Most of our tenants stick to the rules, and they expect other people to as well.

We are looking at making all new tenancies probationary for a year.

Introductory tenancies are time limited to 12 months but could extend to 18. People who stick to their tenancy conditions will automatically become secure tenants at the end of that period.

If you are already a Council tenant this does not apply to you and there would be no change to your current tenancy.

The new rules would bring us in line with most other major cities and registered housing providers in Sheffield.

Introductory tenancies would help us:

  • Take a more proactive approach to resolving issues and problems early on
  • Better manage our limited housing stock
  • Deal with serious tenancy breaches in a fair, consistent and timely fashion
  • Encourage responsible occupancy
  • Provide better, more timely support for and contact with new tenants

Let us know what you think about this proposal in our short survey, including whether you think:

  • We have provided enough information for you to tell us what you think
  • We should make all new council tenancies probationary
  • This is a fair change to the way we work with new tenants

Your views will make a difference to how we allocate social housing in the future so please let us know what you think. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and the deadline to do this is 27 October 2022. Thank you to everyone who has already completed this survey.

How to Pay Your Rent

Published: Wednesday 28 September 2022

It is a condition of tenancy to pay your rent by direct debit.

his process is simple to set up and manage, with several payment date options including weekly, monthly, and fortnightly, and it saves you and the Council time when paying your rent. It is also more cost effective for the organisation and allows us to continue to invest in services throughout the Council. It is the only method of payment that comes with a guarantee.

Some other useful information about Direct Debit:

  • It is quick and easy setup, either over the phone or by filing in a form which can be found

  • You will not need to remember to pay your rent, and therefore will not miss any payments.

  • It avoids arrears and helps sustain tenancies.

  • You will still benefit from any rent-free weeks whilst paying by Direct Debit (these are calculated into your regular payment).

  • Changes to the amount due is done automatically when the rent changes.

Rent is calculated weekly and is payable as soon as the tenancy agreement is signed. Our Direct Debit payment cycles can be tailored to suit your needs (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly) and which option you prefer will be discussed with you when you view your potential home.
